Bungie will begin restoring older Destiny 2 campaigns and raids that were previously removed from the game. The decision follows the studio's admission that its new extraction shooter, Marathon, "did not reach as many players as we had hoped."

Studio head Poria Torkan and head of product Josh Deane made the announcement in an online statement. They acknowledged a period of difficulty for the veteran developer. "Over the last few years, we lost sight of that, and there have been real consequences," they wrote. We lost trust, we lost incredible colleagues, and we lost sight of what we should be prioritizing most, our players.

The leadership duo stated that while players may not trust their words immediately, they are taking action to improve both Destiny 2 and Marathon. This move comes after a significant round of layoffs earlier this year, which saw at least 290 employees depart the studio.

The future of Destiny

Bungie was firm about the franchise's importance. Destiny is foundational to Bungie's future, the statement asserted. We have more stories to tell, new worlds to build, but we have to do it right and give our teams the time they need to do justice to this amazing universe. All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.

The studio has no new games to announce currently. Its immediate plan involves returning a selection of vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, locations, and raids to all players in the coming months. Technical work is required first. Bungie must adjust lighting, combat encounters, and other systems to ensure the returning content meets the current stability and gameplay standards of Destiny 2.

Marathon's need to evolve

The statement also addressed the studio's other major project. Bungie confirmed that Marathon, its stylish extraction shooter, fell short of player acquisition targets. The game needs to evolve, the leadership admitted.

Plans are in place to expand upon the game's existing strengths while also pushing beyond the initial genre constraints. A previously announced permanent PvE mode and a social space, scheduled for December, are intended to broaden the sci-fi shooter's appeal beyond its core competitive audience.
