More than 40 percent of US players cancelling subscriptions to Xbox Game Pass Essential, PlayStation Plus Essential, and Nintendo Switch Online now cite cost as a primary reason. This figure has risen since the first quarter of the year, according to new data from market research firm Circana.

Circana's senior director and video game analyst Mat Piscatella shared the findings. He stated the data shows cost is becoming a stronger driver of cancellations. "Over 40% of those canceling in the US cite cost as a primary driver, higher than seen in Q1," Piscatella said. The analyst was clear that this does not mean more people are cancelling overall. It only indicates that, among those who do cancel, cost is a more frequent complaint.

Survey Details and Figures

The data comes from Circana's Future of Insights for Video Games Consumer Survey. It specifically tracks reasons for cancelling the essential tiers of the three major console subscription services. For Nintendo Switch Online, half of all recent cancellers selected the budget justification option. This represents a significant jump from 40 percent earlier in 2024.

The trend is similar for Microsoft and Sony's services. The survey found 40 percent of cancellations for Xbox Game Pass Essential and PS Plus Essential were due to cost, up from 37 percent in the first quarter.

Context of Rising Prices

The increased focus on cost aligns with broader price increases across the gaming industry. PlayStation Plus saw a price hike earlier this year. Xbox initially planned to nearly double the price of Game Pass before reversing course and removing the new Call of Duty title from the standard subscription. Nintendo Switch Online has maintained its price in most regions.

Hardware has also become more expensive. All three major console makers have raised prices for their devices in various markets this year. Industry reports often cite component costs and market conditions as reasons. Some analysts point to high demand for memory from AI data centers as a factor driving up costs for other hardware manufacturers.

The Analyst's Verdict

Piscatella's analysis emphasizes a shift in consumer sentiment. Previously, subscribers might have cancelled due to a perceived lack of compelling games. Now, the financial calculation is most important. The survey option stated, "Couldn't justify the cost of the subscription within my budget but liked the service." This suggests satisfaction with the service itself is not enough to retain users facing budget constraints.

The data provides a clear snapshot of subscriber priorities. For a significant portion of the audience, the value proposition of these services is being weighed more critically against monthly expenses. While Nintendo Switch Online has not increased its price, it has experienced the largest rise in cost-related cancellations, according to Circana's figures.
