Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director treats
Director Naoki Hamaguchi says he is developing Final Fantasy 7 Revelation as if it will be the last ever Final Fantasy 7 game, aiming to surpass the

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi is approaching the game's development as the definitive end for the series. He stated this in a recent interview with Kotaku, despite planned DLC expansions.
"I’m approaching the development of Revelation as if there’s never going to be another Final Fantasy 7 game… no spin-offs… no DLC in the future," Hamaguchi said. He clarified that this is his development mindset, not a confirmation of the series' end. The director expressed confidence that this approach will allow the team to put everything they have for Final Fantasy 7 into this final installment.
Aiming to become the new legend
Hamaguchi believes this all-in philosophy will enable the game to surpass the original. "That’s why I’ve got this confidence, and I think we’re going to beat the original’s legend," he stated. "We’re going to become the new legend." This is a bold claim, given the original Final Fantasy 7's status as one of the most beloved JRPGs of all time. The source report notes that the remake trilogy, while praised, exists as a modern triple-A series with its own inherent challenges.
Themes ahead of its time
The director also reflected on the enduring themes of the original game. Working on the Remake project highlighted how current the original's topics feel today. Hamaguchi pointed to the game's handling of diversity as a key example.
He noted that social media now makes global information widely accessible, but that was not the case in Japan when the original was developed. "To think that Mr. Kitase and the team put together a game where you see diversity-the variation between party characters, cultures, and people around the world-30-something years ago makes my respect for him even higher," Hamaguchi said. He credited original director Yoshinori Kitase and the team for being ahead of their time.
The final chapter and what follows
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled for release on April 8, 2027. It is positioned as the concluding part of the remake trilogy. However, the source clarifies that the definitive end date remains unclear. This is because two pieces of DLC, focusing on Sephiroth and Vincent Valentine, are also in development. The report from Rock Paper Shotgun questions whether anything in today's IP-driven landscape ever truly ends, even as the director treats this project as a finale.
Hamaguchi's comments present a development team pouring their collective effort into what they view as a potential capstone. The goal is to create a new benchmark for the series. The planned DLC suggests more content will follow the main game's release, but the core development is being handled with a sense of finality.
