Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Preorders Include Magic

Square Enix will include a foil Magic: The Gathering promo card in special day-one editions of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, extending the Universes Beyond

Square Enix will include a foil Magic: The Gathering promo card in special day-one editions of Final Fantasy 7...

Square Enix will bundle a special Magic: The Gathering promo card with physical preorders of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. The publisher announced the game will launch on April 8, 2027, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Special day-one physical editions sold through participating retailers will contain a foil Final Fantasy 7-themed Magic card. The promo depicts Cloud Strife facing Sephiroth. Square Enix states the card will be available while supplies last.

The Promo Card's Mechanics

The card is a reprint of Final Showdown, a white instant spell first printed in the 2024 Magic set Outlaws of Thunder Junction. Its spree mechanic allows players to pay for any combination of three effects.

ModeCost (Mana)Effect
First2Target creature gains indestructible until end of turn.
Second4All creatures lose all abilities until end of turn.
Third6Destroy all creatures.

At its cheapest, the card can protect a key creature for two mana. For six mana, it destroys every creature at instant speed. Paying eight mana activates all three modes in sequence. This makes it a flexible board-clearing spell.

New Art and Franchise Connections

The Final Fantasy version features new artwork by Square Enix character designer Tetsuya Nomura. It replaces the original art of a gunslinger with a scene of Cloud and Sephiroth's confrontation. According to Polygon's report, the source humorously notes this cannot be their actual final showdown from the original game's canon because Sephiroth is depicted with his shirt on.

This is not the first time Square Enix has used a Magic card to promote a video game. Physical Nintendo Switch 2 copies of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, released in June, included a full-art foil promo card featuring Zack Fair. Wizards of the Coast also released other Final Fantasy-themed Magic products after the initial crossover set launched in June 2025.

Potential for Future Collaborations

Magic principal designer Gavin Verhey spoke with Polygon in May about the challenges of adapting the vast Final Fantasy franchise. "We could have made a 2,000-card set and still not covered all the things players wanted to see," Verhey said. He explained the team prioritized major characters and moments but was open to more. "If we ever got the opportunity to do more, of course, I would leap at the opportunity," he added, noting side games were untouched.

Another full Final Fantasy card set is not confirmed. However, supplemental releases like the December 2025 Scene Boxes, the Zack Fair promo, and this new Final Showdown card suggest an ongoing pattern. With Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's release still months away, there is time for Magic's most successful crossover to offer further surprises.
