Grand Theft Auto 6 will let players control protagonists Jason and Lucia, swapping between them during gameplay. The new mechanics, revealed in a Dazed interview, allow the pair to play as a couple or act independently, with weight and muscle changes tied to diet and exercise.

Character Swapping

The interview notes that players can "choose to either play as a couple, or go off and cause chaos independently." A highlighted scenario shows Jason cruising the highway, then swapping to Lucia in the passenger seat to scroll on the in-game phone. This suggests a dynamic couple mode for open-world roaming, while missions may still be solo or joint.

Life-Sim Features

Dazed reports that food will affect Jason and Lucia's weight, and exercising visibly builds and tones their muscles. Playing for long periods without sleeping will also impact their appearance. Rockstar has experimented with similar systems in Red Dead Redemption 2, where Arthur could gain or lose weight based on diet, and in GTA: San Andreas, where CJ could gain weight and lose it through working out.

Development Team

According to Dazed, Rockstar has more than doubled its size since Red Dead Redemption 2. The studio now has an office in Los Angeles dedicated to pedestrian NPCs that fill the open world. It also brought in over 50 real-world street artists to design murals for GTA 6's version of Wynwood, Miami's outdoor art galleries, and a team of actual race car drivers to handle vehicle physics. Players can check the stats to see how these details influence gameplay.

Cultural Touchstones

Players can expect encounters with virtual iterations of Florida Man, the cultural archetype-turned-meme known IRL for wrangling alligators, drunken antics, and literal grand theft auto. The game’s setting will also feature a variety of Florida Men.

Music and Setting

Senior vice president of narrative Ruper Humphries told Dazed that the team loves Miami music, especially Miami bass, and newer Miami artists like Kodak Black and Sexyy Red. They wanted to capture the hip-hop scene in house parties in Overtown, clubs like Booby Trap on the River, and high-end places on South Beach where bottles can cost thousands of dollars. Characters will take players through those worlds.

Backgrounds

Jason is described as an ex-military man and drug runner. Lucia is an amateur fighter fresh out of prison, as seen in trailers.

Player Choices

Dazed suggests that player choices or behavior will affect Jason and Lucia's relationship in ways that "cut much deeper than Rockstar’s previous titles or ‘honour’ systems." The depth of these choices is expected to surpass earlier games.

Players can explore the fixtures to see upcoming missions and consult the squad for character rosters. The standings will track in-game achievements, while the injuries page will detail any character damage.

The interview, published in Dazed magazine, provides a comprehensive look at how Rockstar is expanding the GTA formula with new life-sim mechanics, a larger team, and a deeper focus on player choice and cultural detail.
