Rockstar Games is fundamentally changing how players steal cars in Grand Theft Auto 6. The upcoming sequel will replace the simplify theft of GTA 5 with a detailed, tiered security system that varies by vehicle, according to an analysis of the game's Netflix preview.

A New Theft Process

The first gameplay glimpse in the Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look trailer shows protagonist Jason stealing an old American car. A prompt offers two choices: smash the window or use a slim jim to lower it and unlock the door. Jason chooses the latter method, which takes longer and requires precise controller inputs but is quieter. This scene establishes a new, deliberate pace for the series' core activity.

In contrast, stealing a car in GTA 5 was a simple affair. Players could force drivers out with one button, aim a weapon, or break a window with an elbow strike. That simplicity is gone.

Tiered Security and Required Tools

GTA 6 will implement a vehicle security system where more expensive cars are harder to steal. Players will need specific skills and tools depending on the car's technology. Jason and Lucia will use a device called a "wank scanner" to assess a vehicle's security level and its value before attempting a theft.

The source indicates several protection types will exist. Some cars will have electronic keys that require digital cloning. Others may be fitted with tracking devices that alert police if the car slows down too much, forcing thieves to maintain high speeds.

A Lucrative Fencing System

Another major change is the ability to sell any stolen car. GTA 6 will introduce a fencing system for stolen goods, similar to the one used in Red Dead Redemption 2. This creates a persistent side activity where theft directly feeds into the game's economy.

The Netflix preview also hinted that stolen cars can contain unexpected surprises, adding narrative depth to routine thefts. In one scene, Lucia finds an influencer locked in the trunk of a car she just stole. The source speculates this could lead to finding other bizarre items, from drugs to birthday balloons.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on November 19.
