Grand Theft Auto 6 will introduce more realistic gun mechanics and a vehicle refueling system when it launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. These details, confirmed by Rockstar co-development lead Rob Nelson in an interview with content creator TGG, have ignited debate among players about the game's direction.

According to Nelson, non-playable characters in GTA 6 will react more realistically to visible weapons. "The reactions are much more nuanced than before," he said. "So, if you've got a long gun on your back, you should be fine." He explained that police will issue warnings for brandished firearms, and holding a weapon in a ready-to-fire stance will escalate situations. Nelson contrasted this with Grand Theft Auto 5, where players could pull out a shotgun in front of people with no reaction.

Fan Reactions to Realistic Gunplay

The shift has divided the fanbase. Some players welcome the increased immersion, comparing it favorably to Rockstar's 2018 title Red Dead Redemption 2. One fan argued online, "RDR2 is the best game I've ever played and I love that they are making GTA 6 more like it." Others are more cautious, with one Reddit user noting, "At the point I pull out a gun I’m probably gonna do something worse than brandishing so this is fine." Critics of the change have expressed concern that it moves away from the series' signature chaotic freedom. A user on X, formerly Twitter, lamented, "remember carrying c4, rpgs, molotovs and like 10 guns at once in gta5 those days are over."

The New Vehicle Refueling Mechanic

Another new realism-focused feature is vehicle refueling. Nelson confirmed to TGG that gas stations will allow players to repair and refuel their cars. The YouTuber reported that filling a tank "typically isn't very expensive" and takes about ten seconds. Nelson defended the speed of the process during a preview, saying, "You can't complain about that!"

This mechanic has also proven controversial. One critic listed potential chores in a post on X: "-eat -sleep -go to the gym -nurture my relationship -fill up my car with gas." They questioned, "Isn’t the entire point of a video game to do things you can’t do in real life?" Supporters, however, see it as a source of emergent gameplay. Another fan theorized online that it could create interesting scenarios: "you steal a car, run out of gas, have to continue on foot, try to find a gas station, or a new ride."

Broader Realism and Cut Features

Rockstar's push for a believable world extends beyond these mechanics. The studio has crafted what it promises is the most realistic map in the series for its Miami-inspired Vice City setting. Nelson also revealed that the game will track whether protagonists Jason and Lucia are well-rested, with sleep affecting "regens of certain attributes." Some real-life couples have reportedly argued over in-game romantic interactions with the protagonists or visits to strip clubs.

The developer experimented with even more granular systems but cut them for being too tedious. Nelson told Famitsu, via a GamesRadar translation, that a mechanic requiring players to buy groceries to restock their refrigerator was removed. "We are always trying to find the right balance between realism and ease of play," he explained. "Rather than just going to the fridge to grab a snack or visiting a restaurant just to roleplay, we want to give meaning to each action."

As the November release approaches, the community remains split. A Reddit user summarized the prevailing sentiment, stating, "Just hope they remember to put the fun in. Realism is great, but if it's too tedious it'll be a bummer." Players will finally judge the balance for themselves when Grand Theft Auto 6 arrives later this year.
