Mega Man: Dual Override Preview: Proto Man's Distinct
A Tokyo Game Show preview reveals Proto Man as a distinct, close-range fighter in the upcoming Mega Man: Dual Override, set for a Spring 2027 release.

A Tokyo Game Show 2026 demo for Mega Man: Dual Override offered a hands-on session with Proto Man, the older brother of the series' iconic hero. The game is scheduled for a Spring 2027 launch, coinciding with the franchise's 40th anniversary.
According to a preview by IGN contributor Justin Koreis, Proto Man is not a simple cosmetic alternative to Mega Man. His Proto Buster fires powerful shots with limited range, and his charge attack unleashes a close-range arc slash instead of a long-range energy ball. The weapon also builds up heat, requiring management to avoid overheating and disrupting attacks. This design encourages an aggressive, in-your-face combat style.
Proto Man's Arsenal and Abilities
Proto Man's signature shield is a key defensive and offensive tool. He automatically raises it while jumping, providing protection from projectiles. The shield can also be thrown like a boomerang. Unlike Mega Man, Proto Man does not copy defeated Robot Masters' powers. Instead, his shield gains new abilities. The demo featured two such moves: a leaping uppercut and a horizontal dive attack. These were useful in combat and for accessing hidden collectibles.
Levels in the demo were divided into segments of increasing difficulty. The preview focused on stages themed after a Robot World's Fair, leading to a boss fight against Twinkle Girl. The vibrant, colorful aesthetic was noted as a refreshing change from the drab palettes of some past games.
Progression and Customization
Defeating mid-bosses like Big Press Don rewards Bolts, a currency used in Dr. Light's lab. Similar to Mega Man 11, these Bolts unlock Custom Chips that modify and enhance a character's capabilities. The previewer used a pre-equipped rapid-fire chip that transformed Proto Man's blaster into a machine gun. Additional Bolts are hidden in levels, encouraging exploration. The game uses a checkpoint system instead of limited lives, allowing repeated attempts from recent save points.
The Twinkle Girl Showdown
The final challenge was the Robot Master Twinkle Girl. The fight required adapting to Proto Man's short range, forcing players to stay close enough to attack but far enough to avoid damage. Koreis described it as "an interesting challenge." A notable visual detail was the accumulation of visible damage on characters as they lost health, showing a scuffed and beaten appearance.
During the climactic phase, Twinkle Girl powers up, firing barrages of fireworks. This triggers the player's option to activate a temporary "override mode" for Proto Man, boosting his abilities briefly at the cost of a subsequent weakened state. The preview session ended with a point-blank charged shot securing victory.
Players will select either Mega Man or Proto Man at the start of a playthrough and cannot switch between them during that run, a design choice that promotes replayability. The full scope of Custom Chips and Proto Man's upgraded moveset is not yet clear at the game's launch.
