Nintendo of America COO Devon Pritchard says the company is at the start of the Switch 2's lifecycle. Her comments follow the console's strong sales performance and the reveal of a remake for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Devon Pritchard made the statement in an interview with Variety. She expressed excitement about the games and experiences already on the platform and those still to come from Nintendo and third-party developers. The executive's confidence is backed by recent sales milestones.

Hardware Sales Performance

The Switch 2 set a record as the fastest-selling video game hardware device in US history upon its release last year. It has since sold nearly 20 million units in the US almost one year after launch, making it the second-fastest selling console in the country's history. This success continues despite a recent hardware price increase.

Pritchard highlighted that Nintendo's success extends beyond consoles and games. She pointed to the company's growing presence in film, specifically mentioning a partnership with Sony Pictures.

Expanding into Film

"We are going to have a movie come out in the end of April," Pritchard said, referring to The Legend of Zelda. This follows the massive financial success of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a collaboration with Illumination that earned $1 billion globally. That film made $372.6 million in its opening weekend alone.

While excited about games like the Ocarina of Time remake, Pritchard indicated that film partnerships are a major focus. She sees them as a way to bring Nintendo experiences to current fans and new audiences. The live-action Zelda film, currently titled "The Legend of Zelda," wrapped its initial shoot in New Zealand after beginning in October 2025. A proper trailer has not yet been released.

Competing for Consumer Time

When asked how Nintendo plans to stand out in a crowded media landscape, Pritchard outlined the company's philosophy. She acknowledged the intense competition for consumer attention but said Nintendo's focus is different.

Nintendo is focused instead on building experiences that create relationships that last generations, she stated. The fundamental test for the company, according to Pritchard, is a simple question: is something fun? She admitted that executing on this idea is not simple.

The report concludes by noting Nintendo appears to be weathering broader industry challenges like development crunches and lower consumer spending. The company's current momentum, driven by the Switch 2 and its expanding portfolio, suggests it is betting on this long-term relationship-building strategy to sustain its success.
