Rockstar Games has announced the closed beta for its official Grand Theft Auto Online roleplaying server. Called nopixel 5, the beta begins on September 8 and will be accessible through Rockstar's own launcher.

This marks the culmination of a partnership that began over three years ago when Rockstar acquired the team and technology behind the popular FiveM RP platform. The studio had previously attempted to shut down that modding community.

A Closed Beta for Select Players

The initial nopixel 5 beta will not be open to the public. Rockstar states access will be granted only to a select group of invited content creators and well-known GTA Online roleplayers. However, the studio says fans will be able to watch the action via participant livestreams starting next week.

Rockstar promises the beta will feature familiar faces reprising fan-favorite characters and new personalities beginning their own stories.

What is GTA Roleplay?

In its announcement, Rockstar described the roleplay phenomenon. GTA Roleplay has essentially morphed Grand Theft Auto 5 into a community-driven, multiplayer rendition of Los Santos where participants inhabit bespoke characters to weave personal narratives in a living, shared ecosystem.

The format allows players to create persistent characters, from law-abiding citizens to criminals, all within a world policed by a player-managed force. Rockstar says the city is shaped by every interaction and individual bond.

Nopixel 5's New Features

The new official iteration brings several upgrades. Rockstar says nopixel 5 overhauls the character creator and adds new landmarks for players to explore. The server also promises refreshed visuals and more reactive pedestrians.

A significant convenience is the integration with Rockstar's official launcher. This means players will not need to use external tools or mods when the server eventually opens to a wider audience.

The announcement blog hailed the nopixel group, stating Rockstar is finally throwing its weight behind nopixel, a group that has long redefined roleplay via deep immersion and custom map tweaks.

Platform Availability

The source confirms the following platforms for the broader GTA Online service, though specific availability for the nopixel 5 beta was not detailed beyond the PC launcher.

The reveal of an official RP server comes mere months before the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar has not commented on any potential multiplayer or roleplay features for the upcoming title.
