State of Decay 3 is in development and was playable in an early alpha build at gamescom 2026. According to a preview by IGN, the zombie-survival sequel is planned for a full release in 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam, following a closed playtest toward the end of 2026.

Despite the ongoing changes within Xbox's development teams, the preview states the 30-minute demo showed significant promise. The core pillars of community management and base-building remain, but have been expanded.

Deeper Character and Management Systems

Facilities and buildings now feature branching upgrade paths for specialization, rather than linear progression. Character assignment is crucial. A survivor with medical perks, for instance, can boost the recovery rate of others in the settlement.

The trait system is more impactful. Every procedurally generated character has unique perks and quirks that can evolve. One survivor shown had the "takes long showers" trait, consuming more water, but was adept at melee combat. Another had sniper training for extra damage with long-range weapons, but was more prone to injuries.

A new granular injury system calculates damage to specific body parts, applying debuffs to functions like weapon accuracy or movement speed. Managing over 30 characters with these traits creates complex dynamics for field combat and base assignments.

Combat and Infestation Clearance

Combat against zombie hordes has evolved. The game's large open world is dotted with infestation networks visible on the map. The goal is to clear infested settlements and plague nests to cut off the spread.

Each infestation location has a heart, sometimes hidden in a facility or a dungeon-style area. To destroy it, players must find and attack four weak points scattered around the location while fending off zombies. Destroying the heart triggers a final, larger horde. Once the heart is destroyed, the remaining zombies die.

The preview notes that gunplay feels smoother and punchier than in previous entries. Weapons like an AK-47 with a drum mag and a silenced pistol were used in the demo. New combat options include luring zombies into flammable oil spills, using stealth to thin herds, and a running slide to knock down weaker zombies for a finisher move. Playstyles can be emphasized by using survivors with matching traits.

Persistent Threats and Multiplayer

The main thrust appears to be map-wide territory control by clearing and containing infestations. Infestations will respawn over time, and sieges on player settlements will pose a persistent threat. This creates a background simulation that runs alongside the constant need to gather resources like food and water.

The game will include drop-in/drop-out co-op multiplayer with no restrictions on how players explore the open world. Undead Labs also referenced a dynamic difficulty system designed to prevent the game from becoming too easy or too punishing.

The preview concluded by acknowledging the somewhat rough technical performance of the early alpha build, which is expected to be refined during continued development.
