Sunset Overdrive is the best exclusive game on the Xbox One, according to a retrospective from IGN. The 2014 title from Insomniac Games is described as a brilliant, style-filled open-world adventure that arrived on the wrong console at the wrong time.

Ryan McCaffrey, an IGN editor and former Official Xbox Magazine staffer, penned the opinion piece. He states that while the Xbox One era was rough for Microsoft due to platform woes and a lack of strong first-party games, Sunset Overdrive was a diamond in the rough. McCaffrey believes the game would have been a massive hit if released on the Xbox 360 or as a PlayStation 4 title.

A Game Out of Time

Insomniac Games, known for Ratchet & Clank and not yet owned by Sony, developed Sunset Overdrive as an exclusive for Microsoft's new console. McCaffrey argues the game's October 2014 release coincided with the fallout from the Xbox One's controversial 2013 reveal and launch. Despite this, he says Insomniac delivered a rare open-world game with both style and substance, featuring a cel-shaded art style and a dystopian punk vibe mixed with comedy.

IGN's review at the time loved it. McCaffrey personally advocated for it in Game of the Year discussions, expressing lingering disappointment that Dragon Age: Inquisition beat it out. "Its timing really couldn’t have been any worse," he writes.

Gameplay and Legacy

The piece highlights the game's fun, unique quests and its central traversal mechanic. Handle the world via grind rails took some adjustment but soon became a thrilling way to zoom around. McCaffrey laments that a sequel was never made, noting that retired Insomniac founder Ted Price told him the studio wanted to make one.

Price also reportedly revealed the game was originally conceived to be more like Fortnite. McCaffrey speculates that this decision might haunt the studio. More concretely, he credits Sunset Overdrive's movement systems as a direct precursor to the acclaimed web-swinging in Insomniac's later Marvel's Spider-Man games.

Availability and Final Verdict

The article notes the game's limited availability. Despite Sony's acquisition of Insomniac, Sunset Overdrive was never ported to PlayStation 4. It did, however, come to PC in 2018.

For McCaffrey, the game's status is clear. He calls it "the very best Xbox One exclusive" and contends it would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best exclusives from PlayStation or the Xbox 360. Its fate, he concludes, was shaped by circumstances far beyond the quality of the game itself.
