Thank You Bus Driver Launches Double Fine Action Labs
Double Fine's first post-Xbox game, a chaotic bus sim, arrives October 14, 2026, marking the start of its new experimental label.

Thank You Bus Driver will launch on October 14, 2026. It is Double Fine's first game since being dropped by Xbox and the inaugural title under its new Action Labs label for weird, little games. The announcement comes less than three months after Xbox ended its relationship with the studio earlier this summer.
Tim Schafer, the CEO of Double Fine Productions, described the split as amicable. He said there was no ill will between Xbox and Double Fine, adding that he loves Game Pass as an idea and hopes it succeeds. The studio's independence followed a broader Xbox restructuring led by CEO Satya Nadella.
Game Details
Thank You Bus Driver is a black-and-white chaotic bus driving sim. Double Fine describes it on Bluesky as "Crazy Taxi meets Papers, Please!" Players drive a town's bus route against the clock, with three core priorities: Get To Your Next Stop, Keep the Schedule, and No Breaking the Rules.
Rules posted by the depot change daily. Rulebreakers on the bus can be slapped with long arms or ejected out the door at speed. The fence between the bus and the next stop is optional. Each 'thank you' from a happy passenger adds precious seconds to the timer, enforcing a loop of minimal rule breaking and maximum gratitude.
The game was conceived by Will Koehler of Double Fine and built by a small team in a matter of weeks. It launches on PC on October 14 via Steam, GOG, and itch.io.
Context and Vision
Double Fine Action Labs is the studio's newly independent label for experimental games. Tim Schafer detailed the vision in a recent interview. "They're complete games. They're not incomplete. But they're rough and scrappy and small." he said.
This pivot to small experiments is central to Double Fine's post-independence strategy. The plan includes a public Kickstarter revival of Amnesia Fortnight, the studio's internal game jam, which will likely yield another Action Labs title. Schafer, the designer behind Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, expressed confusion over industry job losses despite commercial success, assuming someone is being greedy somewhere.
