Chernin Entertainment has won the rights to adapt the video games Arc Raiders and The Finals into film and television projects. The deal, struck with Nexon and its development studio Embark Studios, followed a competitive bidding process involving multiple production companies vying for the popular intellectual properties. The agreement comes just months after Chernin Entertainment found major box office success with its horror film Backrooms.

Studio collaboration details

Embark Studios' creative teams will work closely with Chernin Entertainment during the adaptation process. The collaboration is designed to ensure the games' distinctive creative vision is carried into new formats. Patrick Söderlund, Founder and CEO of Embark Studios and Executive Chairman of Nexon, described the deal as the next step in turning both series into deeply integrated transmedia experiences. He stated the goal is to ensure the creativity that defines both of these properties extends into all-new formats.

David Ready, the film president of Chernin Entertainment, said the games represent the kind of opportunity his company has been building toward. He noted that Nexon and Embark have created visually stunning, atmospheric worlds that contain countless stories to tell.

Games' background and success

Both titles are established hits with large player bases and distinct sci-fi settings that Chernin Entertainment views as having significant franchise potential. Arc Raiders, a game set on a lethal future Earth ravaged by a mysterious mechanized threat known as ARC, has sold over 16 million copies since its release. Players enlist as Raiders to scavenge a vibrant, atmospheric world while contending with deadly machines and rival factions. The game is set in the year 2180 and launched in October 2025.

The Finals is a free-to-play, fast-paced, first-person shooter set inside a virtual combat game show in a dystopian 2100 reality. Since its launch in 2023, it has registered more than 30 million players. The collaboration explicitly aims to grow both games into deeply integrated transmedia experiences for their global communities.

Chernin's recent track record

The production company brings a proven ability to adapt properties for global audiences, particularly in the genre space. Chernin Entertainment is the flagship scripted film and television label of The North Road Company, started by Peter Chernin. Its recent hits include the horror sensation Backrooms, which grossed over $400 million worldwide on a budget of just $10 million. The company also produced the successful Netflix films The Last House and Apex.

This move places Arc Raiders and The Finals among a large number of video games currently awaiting film or television adaptations. It follows other major industry deals, such as the recent agreement between Sega and Netflix for projects based on Sonic The Hedgehog, Crazy Taxi, and Stranger Than Heaven. No director, writer, or cast has been announced for the adaptations of Arc Raiders and The Finals.
