GTA 6 Price Increase Seen as Key to Industry Survival

Warhorse Studios co-founder Martin Klima argues that rising game prices, exemplified by GTA 6's $80 launch, are essential for studios to survive soaring development costs.

Martin Klima, co-founder of Warhorse Studios, believes the video game industry faces an existential problem. He states that increasing the unit price of games is the last viable way for studios to maximize cash flow without relying on microtransactions, as development costs balloon and the audience for new games has maxed out.

Klima argues that digital marketplaces already provide maximal returns on units sold, leaving no new revenue streams to support the growing costs of making big games. He hopes Grand Theft Auto 6, which launches for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, will blaze a trail to higher game prices. Take-Two is estimated to have spent between $1 billion and $2 billion developing and marketing the title, which is widely speculated to be the most expensive game ever made.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has previously commented on pricing speculation. He said consumers pay for value delivered and that the company's job is to charge less than that value. Zelnick stated that if they serve customers well and make the most spectacular piece of entertainment in history, the upside will take care of itself.

Retail disruption

The move to digital storefronts has cut out the retail middle-man, a shift Klima attributes to the industry itself. He claimed brick and mortar retail is basically dead. Martin Klima said: "We destroyed retail, and we took all their money." He also referenced the Covid-19 pandemic creating artificial demand that has since faded.

GTA 6 pricing specifics

Take-Two confirmed in June that GTA 6 will launch at $80, positioning it as a pricing benchmark. This is $10 more than the conventional price for big-budget games. The Ultimate Edition pushes the effective price even higher.

Standard Edition$79.99£69.99
Ultimate EditionUp to $99.99Not specified

Klima acknowledged that somebody is making games that are technological marvels, like GTA 6. Locking significant content in the Ultimate Edition makes it effectively a $100 game. He believes Rockstar and Take-Two are the only ones who can afford or dare to increase game prices first.

Industry reactions

While Zelnick defends value-based pricing, Klima warns price hikes are a last resort. He states that everybody is scared to death about increasing game prices. Bank of America securities analyst Omar Dessouky called for a higher price on GTA 6 in May, arguing that its success could raise the price point for the entire industry.

Last year, Xbox tried to launch The Outer Worlds 2 for $80 before backing down to $70. Klima wishes Rockstar and Take-Two luck, hoping GTA 6's success will allow other studios to follow. Martin Klima said: "The last thing you can do is to increase the unit price."
