Gundam Rogue Orbit Aims to Be a Friendly, Flashy Mech Game
Bandai Namco's Gundam Rogue Orbit is a high-mobility action game designed as a new entry point, focusing on flashy melee combat over punishing difficulty.

Bandai Namco's new Gundam game, Gundam Rogue Orbit, is designed as a stylish and accessible entry point into the franchise. After playing a build at Tokyo Game Show, Polygon reports the game feels fun and flashy, avoiding the punishing challenge of Soulslikes or the complexity of five decades of Gundam lore.
The action is melee-focused, with comparisons drawn to the panache of Devil May Cry. Combat is not overly restrictive, and while a mobile suit can overheat from boosting or shooting too quickly, the game rarely feels punishing. The initial reveal drew comparisons to series like Armored Core and Monster Hunter, but Rogue Orbit does not feel as immediately challenging as 2023's Armored Core 6.
The Story and Setup
Gundam Rogue Orbit casts players as RE-X, pilot of the Gundam Helix, alongside a Haro companion named Vii. Their mission is to fight hordes of invasive alien creatures called Apocalypse. The Helix mobile suit is well-equipped for this threat, with the Tokyo Game Show demo offering three distinct weapon assemblies.
Each assembly comes with its own Tactical Skills and AP Units. Tactical Skills are powerful screen-filling attacks using beams, explosions, or frenetic melee. AP Units offer more limited special abilities, like deployable shields, with pilots able to equip two at any time.
Combat and Customization
A key combat layer is the Over-Rise system. By attacking enemies, pilots fill a gauge that allows them to activate Over-Rise. This powers up basic attacks and provides automatic evasion for a brief period. The gauge can also be burned for an ultimate attack called an AP Unit Burst, described as filling the screen with energy blasts focused on a single enemy.
The game also promises high levels of mobile suit customization, both tactical and visual. While the TGS demo limited players to pre-built assemblies, the potential depth for mech enthusiasts to tweak their loadouts appears significant.
Release Details
Players will not have to wait long to see if this action-focused spinoff sets a new standard. Bandai Namco has slated Gundam Rogue Orbit for release on March 5, 2027. The game is in development for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
