A 12-terabyte archive of Valve's internal development files has leaked online. The massive data dump, first flagged on Friday, August 29, 2026, by Twitter user Gabe Follower, contains material dated between 2003 and 2013. It includes early versions of major titles and hints at long-lost projects.

According to Gabe Follower, the archive holds early builds of Portal 2, Left 4 Dead, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Assets from the cancelled Portal prequel known as F-Stop are also present. The leak "potentially" contains material tied to the never-released Half-Life 2: Episode Three.

The community is now sifting through the enormous cache. A clearer picture of its full contents may take days to emerge.

Early Builds and Cut Content

One significant find is a beta build of Portal 2 from around 2009. This early version contains a model for the "Weaponizer." This weapon was previously linked by fans to Episode Three, though never officially confirmed. In this Portal 2 build, it appears to have been used only as a placeholder asset.

The leak also contains a fully playable Left 4 Dead beta from June 2008. This build features an early heads-up display and a work-in-progress lobby screen. Cut audio files have been identified, including lines recorded for the character Zoey by original voice actor Alésia Glidewell. Jen Taylor later replaced Glidewell for the final game.

Source and Scope of the Leak

The leaked material reportedly originates from Valve's old Steam2 content-delivery system. Valve phased out this infrastructure in the early 2010s in favor of its current SteamPipe technology.

This incident is separate from a cyber attack Valve disclosed earlier in August 2026. That breach affected its European shipping partner, CEVA Logistics, and exposed hardware customers' personal data. No Valve game data was involved in that earlier event. Valve has not commented on this new leak of its internal archives.

The Shadow of Half-Life

The leak fuels ongoing speculation about Valve's most famous unfinished project. While the archive may hold clues about Episode Three, we already know Half-Life 3 was in development around 2013 and 2014. That cancelled project was designed to be a procedurally-generated, replayable game. It aimed to blend Left 4 Dead-inspired gameplay with scripted story moments. Development stalled because it was built on the unfinished Source 2 engine.

Separately, a trustworthy report from 2024 indicated Valve is working on a major new Half-Life project. Codenamed HLX, that project was described as "playable, end-to-end" at the time. The vast new leak, a portal to Valve's past, offers raw materials for historians and fans to piece together what might have been.
