Warhammer 40k: Updates, Not Sequels
Creative Assembly has no plans for sequels to Total War: Warhammer 40,000, opting instead for ongoing major updates to a single, expansive sandbox game.

Creative Assembly will not develop sequels for its upcoming Total War: Warhammer 40,000. The studio plans to support the single title with continuous major updates, aiming to build a unified, ever-growing sandbox experience.
Battle product owner Dave Petry explained the decision. He stated the team felt this approach was the right thing to do given the scale of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, describing it as a huge galaxy to fill.
The studio's vision is to create a singular, persistent game world. This model draws inspiration from the Immortal Empires sandbox mode in the fantasy Total War: Warhammer trilogy. The goal is to avoid splitting the player base across multiple releases. Petry explained they plan to have major releases and update the game with significant content, looking at what Total War is and at examples like Immortal Empires.
A Unified Sandbox Vision
Petry emphasized the importance of a cohesive experience. He said the team wants all players to access the full game world from a single entry point. This philosophy aims to let players experience everything without being segmented into separate products, noting that the true experience is the sandbox.
The strategy allows developers to focus collectively on improving one core game. Petry argued this enables the team to build better together. They can concentrate on the same technical challenges and content within a shared development space. He added that the team felt this was super important, as it puts them in a position to work on the same thing in the same space with the same problems and keep making it better together with everyone.
Launch Factions and Future Plans
The game will launch with four customizable factions: the Space Marines, Aeldari, Orks, and Astra Militarum. In the future, there are plans for other Space Marine chapters like the Space Wolves, and both Genestealers and Chaos Space Marines are also potential options.
This list indicates the studio's long-term roadmap. The Space Wolves are a confirmed planned addition, while Genestealers and Chaos Space Marines are listed as potential options.
Release and Expectations
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is currently set for release sometime in 2027, and you can wishlist it on Steam. The announcement sets clear expectations for the game's post-launch support. Players should anticipate a live-service model with significant expansions rather than traditional numbered sequels. This approach represents a major shift from the studio's previous trilogy structure for the fantasy Warhammer setting.
Creative Assembly's decision reflects the vast scope of the 40,000 universe. The studio seems committed to a single, evolving platform for this sci-fi strategy title.
